A groundbreaking study has revealed a stark disparity in the administration of life-saving antenatal treatments for premature babies across the globe. The research, led by the University of Bristol, highlights significant variations in the use of magnesium sulphate and antenatal corticosteroids, which are crucial in reducing the risk of cerebral palsy and respiratory complications in preterm infants. The study found that while some countries, like Ireland and the UK, have high administration rates of magnesium sulphate (over 80%), others, such as South Africa and the UAE, have much lower rates (33.6% and 44.5%, respectively). Higher-income countries averaged 74.8% MgSO4 implementation compared to just 49.4% in middle-income countries. And this is the part most people miss... It calls for a more equitable approach to ensure that all mothers, regardless of their country of birth, have access to evidence-based treatments that offer the best start in life.
