Regions like the eastern North Atlantic, northern Britain, Scandinavia, the southwestern Mediterranean, and parts of Russia experienced record-breaking warmth. France takes the top spot as Europe’s most heatwave-vulnerable nation. By 2100, it could experience five heatwaves annually, totaling 115 days of extreme heat. Average temperatures may reach a scorching 37°C, with nearly four months of the year spent in heatwave conditions. Imagine summers where stepping outside feels like walking into an oven—this could be France’s new reality.
Russia follows closely behind, with an overall heatwave score of 79.92. It will face two annual heatwaves, boasting the highest average temperature in Europe at 37.99°C, with peaks reaching 39.71°C. Russia’s traditionally icy climate could become a distant memory, replaced by sweltering summers that defy its historical norms.
Eastern Europe is the unexpected wildcard in this scenario. Romania, Moldova, and Bulgaria rank third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, surpassing even the Mediterranean countries. Romania and Moldova will each face three heatwaves per year, lasting 17 days, while Bulgaria will endure two heatwaves totaling 14 days. These nations, often overlooked in climate discussions, are poised to become Europe’s new heatwave hotspots.
And this is the part most people miss: the Mediterranean countries, traditionally associated with heat, are showing surprising resilience. Turkey, Greece, and Italy rank lower than expected, in 6th, 7th, and 10th places, respectively. Turkey will experience one annual heatwave lasting 13 days, while Greece will face the longest individual heatwave durations at 20 days, though only twice a year. Italy fares the best, with just one heatwave event lasting nine days.
