University of Nottingham: Staff Concerns Over Pay Changes (2026)

University of Nottingham Staff Face Salary Cuts Amid Allowance Overhaul

The University of Nottingham's staff are facing potential salary cuts as a result of a controversial decision to overhaul their allowance system. The university's spokesperson revealed that the current approach, which compensates staff in different departments in varying ways, is being phased out.

The new policy, which has been agreed upon with three trade unions (Unite, Unison, and the University and College Union), will see staff in the lowest three pay grades (levels 1 to 3) receive a 15% pay increase when working hours are deemed 'unsociable'. However, this change has sparked concern among staff, particularly those in Unison, who fear a reduction in their salaries.

The overhaul began in 2022, with negotiations over the new system starting in January 2025. The fixed monthly payments, which have been a source of inconsistency, are being replaced. While the university aims to ensure fair and consistent recognition and payment for all staff, a small number of employees are expected to face salary cuts.

Vicki Norris, branch secretary for Unison, emphasized that the changes are not final and that negotiations on 'mitigation' will resume next week. This indicates that there is still room for adjustment and that the university is open to addressing the concerns of its staff.

The university's decision has raised questions about the balance between fairness and consistency in compensation, and it remains to be seen how the affected staff will respond to this controversial change.
