President Donald Trump officially launched TrumpRx this evening, a direct-to-consumer, government-operated platform where Americans can now purchase prescription medications at significantly reduced prices. "This is a big deal, this is a very big deal, people are gonna save a lot of money and be healthy," President Trump declared at a press event in Washington, D.C.
The portal will offer "dozens" of the "most commonly used prescription drugs." A major highlight is the inclusion of popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. For instance, Ozempic, which typically costs over $1,000, will now be available for just $199. Similarly, Wegovy, another GLP-1 medication, will see its price drop from $1,300 to $199. The President proudly stated that these price reductions represent the "largest reduction in prescription drug prices in history by many, many times, and it's not even close."
This initiative is rooted in Trump's "most favored nations" pricing scheme. The core idea is to align U.S. drug prices with those paid by countries that have the lowest prices globally. Drug companies have agreed to sell medications to Americans at these lower international rates, aiming to end a system where, according to Trump, Americans were "effectively subsidizing the cost of drugs for the entire world." It's important to note that while prices are expected to decrease for Americans, they might see an increase in other nations.
During the launch event, Dr. Mehmet Oz, who serves as the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, provided a demonstration of the TrumpRx website. He explained that the site connects users to direct-to-consumer purchasing platforms from major pharmaceutical companies and also provides links to coupons for in-person pharmacy purchases. Dr. Oz emphasized that TrumpRx will safeguard the "most vulnerable" by ensuring access to affordable medications, stating, "One in three Americans are turned away from the drugstore. They can't afford the drugs. No more. Our most vulnerable are protected."
But here's where it gets controversial... This announcement follows months of anticipation, with the Trump administration frequently promoting the TrumpRx website as a key solution to rising living costs. The administration has engaged with pharmaceutical industry leaders, securing agreements for these "most-favored nation" prices. Last July, the President sent letters to leading drug companies, demanding they match these lower foreign prices for American consumers. In response, 14 major drug companies have agreed to participate in the TrumpRx website and offer these "most-favored nation" prices.

This rollout comes as the administration's decision not to extend Covid-era tax credits has led to substantial rate increases for health plans purchased on Affordable Care Act exchanges.
