Rodri has become the latest voice from Manchester City to express frustration with the referees' rulings, asserting that they should maintain neutrality despite the negative sentiment he believes surrounds the club.
The controversial moment came during City's recent clash with Tottenham. Tottenham's Dominic Solanke scored a goal, making it 2-1, by seemingly kicking the ball off the leg of City's Marc Guéhi. Solanke's subsequent stunning volley secured a 2-2 draw, leaving City trailing league leaders Arsenal by six points.
Manager Pep Guardiola was vocal about his belief that Solanke's goal should have been disallowed due to a foul on Guéhi. This incident added to a series of calls that have gone against City. Guardiola previously criticized the referee's decision to disallow an Antoine Semenyo goal for Manchester City against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup. He also felt aggrieved when Manchester United's Diogo Dalot escaped a red card for a dangerous foul on Jérémy Doku in the derby, and when City were not awarded a penalty for a handball against Wolves.
Rodri's emotional response captures the team's sentiment: 'We've achieved so much, and it seems like people don't want us to win anymore. But referees need to be impartial. It's frustrating because we give our all.'
He elaborated, 'That first goal for Tottenham changed everything. If that hadn't happened, we might have won. It's becoming a recurring theme, and it's just not right. I rarely criticize referees, as I respect their role, but they need to be vigilant about these incidents. The foul was obvious. It's been happening for several games now, and I can't understand why.'
