Aimee Canny's Impressive 400 IM Debut: A New National Ranking (2026)

Aimee Canny, a senior from South Africa, made a remarkable 400 IM debut at the Cavalier Invite Day 3, clocking a time of 4:03.36 and securing the 6th spot this season. This achievement is even more impressive considering the rarity of international athletes excelling in their first attempt at a specific event in short-course yards. Canny's performance builds on her previous successes, including scoring at NCAAs with times of 4:34.26 in the 500 free and 1:54.05 in the 200 IM, showcasing both endurance and stroke versatility.

The Cavalier Invite, held from February 5th to 7th, 2026, at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, VA, featured a variety of events and formats. The results for each day are available on Meet Mobile, with specific links provided for Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 Prelims and Finals.

Canny's 400 IM time of 4:03.36 was achieved in the morning prelims, with splits of 55.55, 1:02.61, 1:09.85, and 55.35. This performance not only earned her a new personal best but also propelled her to the 6th national ranking this season. Additionally, Canny set new personal bests in the 100 free (47.79) and 100 breast (58.30).

The Cavalier team continued its dominance, with Katie Grimes winning the women's 200 back in 1:51.21, moving her up to 10th nationally. Emma Weber and Tess Howley also contributed to Virginia's success in the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly, respectively. Leah Hayes, another Cavalier swimmer, swam the 400 IM twice, finishing with times of 4:05.21 and 4:05.68.

The William & Mary Tribe women and men also had their moments, with Lauren Tucker and Tyler Barritt winning the 1650 freestyle and 1650 freestyle title, respectively. Virginia swimmers Jack Aikins and Maximus Williamson secured wins in the 200 back and 100 free, while St. Bonaventure's Corey Su and Towson's Jackson Cummins emerged victorious in the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly, respectively.

The meet concluded with William & Mary taking the women's 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.02, and Virginia swimmers showcasing their versatility and skill across various events.
